Close shot. Polished version.

Here the polished version of the close shot. I am not callig it "final" because I could tweak small things if I receive some wise comments. :D Enjoy and be happy!

And we keep on learning! ¡Y seguimos aprendiendo!

Now with a close shot. It's my first close shot, so I am learning a lot with this as well. It's only refined, I still have to polish it. I'll update soon. :-)

New planning and blocking pass

This is the most fun planning I've ever done! I don´t usually animate with such a cartoon style, so I wanted to give it a try. And here it is! And below, you can see the blocking pass. I'll update with the refined version as soon as possible. :-)

Enjoy! (Feedback is welcome!)

Snif. :D

I am very happy because I came to the second place in the "Arte y Animación" contest. The first place has been reached by a guy whose level is amazing, so I count myself lucky with my second place. There were awesome animations there! It's a shame that there is no award for the second position though... :D

In the blog www.arteyanimacion.es an animation contest was announced. I couldn´t take part on it until I finished Animation Mentor, in December, and the deadline was on the 15th. But then they extended it to the 9th of January, so more people could take part on it. So I tried. And this is the result:

Blocking:

Refining:

Polish:

Animation Mentor: Mission succeeded!!

I've done it! I've finished Animation Mentor. It doesn´t mean I know everything about animation at all, but it's a good starting point. Here you can see my reel so far. Still have a lot of work to do on the two-character shot, which is the weakest by now. I will try to improve it as much as I can. As the reel is not finished yet, I haven´t added any cover to it nor any personal details.

Now is time to keep studying and practising, so everything I've learnt stays in my mind and I keep adding new things to it. In this profession you never ever stop learning! :-)

To maintain the same level without mentors supervising my job will definitely be a challenge. I will do my best!

¡Ya está aquí el trailer de Olentzero! :D

A. Mentor: Class 2 - week 5

Here it is, the last version of the animation of the turnaround, already reviewed and added the last details Chiang pointed out. He liked the result and suggested me to add the squash&stretch that I still hadn´t added, so I did it subtly. I think I still have to get rid of some pops on the knees, but well, now it's time to move on to the next assignment.

For the next few weeks I will be animating this parkour sequence:

And here is the blocking, with the main poses in stepped:

James liked it in general, especially the jumps. He told me that the worst part is the ending, where the change of weight and the movement are confusing. I also have to check some frames at the beginning, when the character runs, and make the line of action clearer and cleaner in general. He insists a lot in having a good line of action. He has even done plannings only by drawing the line of action, and he manages to make them comunicate and make sense. He avoids flat poses, and tells us to add small rotations everywhere to create a more organic and 3-dimensional sense in the character.

A. Mentor: weeks 3 and 4

This term has been a bit troubled. Our mentor, Chad Stewart, has had to leave the course because his house was burnt down, so he was temporarily replaced by T. Dan Hofstedt, who was the one that looked at the video I published in the last post and made amusing comments about the squash&stretch of the movements of my cat.

Finally, James Chiang has taken over, and I have to say that I feel very fortunate to have him as a mentor. He is very demanding, very honest, very constructive, he explains wonderfully and he gives the impression of knowing perfectly not only his work as an animator, but also his work as a teacher. This guy is amazingly good giving critiques to the student´s work. He knows exactly what is wrong from the moment he sees it, and he doesn´t hesitate to let you know it: "This is wrong, I don´t know anybody who moves this way, you have to do it this way, the way you did it doesn´t make any sense because you have to transfer the weight from one leg to another and blablabla". And he draws several lines and suddenly you see it so clear! And he also gets the critiques done all by monday, which is a great improvement in comparison with last term, when I got mine about tuesday night or wednesday morning.

This is my reblocking for last week:

I have to say that James didn´t like it at all. He said that I didn´t change the weight properly, the timing was too even (it's linear mode, so it is logical) and, well, that it was quite bad. My grade was acceptable though.

He recommended us not to use linear mode. He said that, in stepped (with no interpolation between poses), our brain can calculate the perfect timing, and it is this timing the one we have to try to reproduce in our animation through the graph editor. We usually see the animation correct in stepped mode, and when we change to linear we make a mess with it and then we try to solve it going to splines. Why not going to splines directly? Well, I did it and it works! :D

Following his directions, this is the refined animation for the fourth week:

Me encanta Animation Mentor. :)

He liked it a lot more and he gave me a very good grade, which is not easy to get with James. This term I am learning a lot, and I still have to learn much more! I can´t stop trying to assimilate more and more information. I love Animation Mentor. :)

A. Mentor: Class 2 - week 2

We have started the second term of Animation Mentor. It has been a bit hard to go back to work after some days in Asturias, but I think I am in shape again.

The second term promises to be much more interesting and hard than the first one. We'll keep on animating Ballie (the ball with legs), simulating the hips and legs of a human body. Later we will add the upper body and the head, without arms yet to be able to understand how the torso reacts to the movement as well (when we beginners animate the arms, we tend to forget about the spine and shoulders), and finally we will add the arms and we will have Stewie, a funny little character we will make very nice animations with during the second and third terms.

At the moment, we have had to choose one among several activities to animate with Ballie, and I have chosen a 180 degrees turnaround. What you will see next is the "blocking". The blocking consists of choosing the main storytelling poses (here everything we learnt about poses in the first term begins to come into place). These poses have to be created carefully, trying to express as much as possible, as we did in previous exercises. At this point, the interpolation between poses will be stepped, not fluid, because what we are interested in is only if our idea works, its timing and duration and if it looks entertaining and interesting.

Last week we did the planning and we took video reference to help us with the animation. Video reference is probably the most useful tool for this exercises, but we never must copy: we must interpret and exaggerate what we see. During the next two weeks we will polish the poses and the blocking and we'll smooth the animation until it looks fluid.

Animation Mentor: week 5

During the 5th week in Animation Mentor we had to make a new Stu pose that expressed devastation, I mean, great sadness. On the other hand, we needed to do an obstacle course with a ball, practising for the first time squash and stretch, that consists of squashing the ball when it hits something to create a bigger impression on the impact, and of stretching it when it goes fast to increase the sensation of speed. It is a very common tool in animation, but it is recommended to use it in moderation, especially in realistic animation.

Here is the animation:

My mentor didn´t like it too much, because it was supposed to behave as a soccer ball, and mine was behaving more as a small light ball. As making a review would have meant to change the whole circuit, I didn´t do any review.

Here are my Stu sketches:

And here the three poses I liked best. Finally I chose the first one. My mentor liked this one.

Animation Mentor: week 3

The second week in Animation Mentor we already started animating. We began with the bouncing ball. First the planning:

Y luego la animación:

And then the animation:

The bouncing ball is a basic and great exercise to learn how to measure the timing in animation: how long does it take to go from one contact position to another? Does it take the same length for every bounce? How does the ball loose energy? How many bounces does the ball do before stopping?

And also to learn the spacing between "drawings" to make the ball speed up or slow down, depending of if it is going up, down or at the top of the bounce.

As these two are the main characteristics in an animation, we focused on them in this our first animation of the course.

We also had to do another pose for our friend Stu.
But it is one of the ones I showed in the previous post, so I will let you guess which one. A clue: we had to express excitement. :D

Animation Mentor: Poses

Animation Mentor is an animation course. However, our first assignment is not animation. Our first assignment is this:

Our first character is called Stu and he is the one you can see in the images above. The first assignment is about creating poses for him. The poses in the first image were casual poses, people sitting in the park or similar; in the second image you can find excitement poses. To do them, we need to do (and show) several sketches like these ones below. Sorry about the quality of the images, I don´t have a scanner and I have to deal with my mobile phone camera:

Why poses? Because we, as animators, have to create emotions. We have to express the emotions with the whole body. That is why it is so important that Stu doesn´t have any facial features. When we don´t understand body language, we tend to lean on the facial expression to understand what a person is feeling. Now we are learning as well how to read the body pose: if the character is very excited, the whole body will be tense; if he is devastated, the whole body will be relaxed... Things like that. They lead us to exaggerate the poses, not for us to animate cartoon, but to understand how much we can push them. Animation is about conveying emotions to the audience, make him feel what the character is feeling. To get that, the pose needs to be clear, readable and appealing... Things not always easy to achieve.

Animation Mentor is about to start!

After all this time, Animation Mentor is here! It has not been easy. I paid in August and they didn´t receive my payment, so I waited until they asked me for my receipt. I sent it, but they didn´t find my money anyway. And finally, looking into my account again, I found out that the money was back into my account! But 162€ seemed to get lost during that period and I don´t think I will recover them.

I don´t know if it is Animation Mentor's fault, because they changed the account number and they didn´t let me know about that change; maybe they told me and it was my fault because I didn´t find the information about the new account number anywhere; maybe it was the bank's fault, because as soon as they see some money passing by, they take some of it for themselves; maybe it is nobody's fault and it is only that the dollar costs more now. No idea. But I have lost a lot of money, and I am not happy with that.

Anyway. My boyfriend (thanks a lot, darling) made the transfer again (I couldn´t do it without the online banking that I still don´t have) and this time it worked! So I am going to start Animation Mentor. That MAKES me happy, so let's look at the brighter side of our lives. :)

Accepted in Animation Mentor!

I have just received an email that says:

"Congratulations Fall Student!

You have been accepted into the Fall Term for 2009 for the Advanced Studies in Character Animation program at Animation Mentor! "

So I am in! :)
